Our world is experiencing increasingly frequent and unpredictable weather patterns with unprecedented outcomes as a result of climate change. This course offers a practical introduction to effective landscape and garden practices that can help make land more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Both home gardeners and professional landscapers will learn what climate change is, how climate change and extreme weather affects ecosystems, species adaptation and extinction, growing zones, pests and disease.

This course connects climate events to the landscape and provides knowledge and tools for preparing for and managing these events. From managing water to planning and maintaining your landscape, this course provides a means to prepare for climate change while also highlighting how you can make an impact with small changes to your landscape management practices.

This course prepares you to:

  • Make the connections between climate change and the impacts on local ecosystems
  • Manage water wisely during both drought and excessive rain
  • Enhance food security by growing your own food
  • Understand the vital role soil plays in ecosystem health
  • Maintain a landscape with climate resilience in mind

Course Details

Course outline

This is a self paced course. Students will have access to the course materials for 2 months from the time of enrolment.

    Topics covered:
  • Impacts of climate change on local ecosystems
  • Managing water during climate events
  • Climate change impacts to food
  • The role of soil
  • Planning and maintaining a landscape with the climate in mind
Time Expectations

Students can expect to dedicate 15 to 20 hours to successfully complete this course.

Our courses are offered in the continuing education realm and are designed so students can complete them according to their own schedule. The material is divided up into 5 topics, students will have access to the material for 2 months.

Our courses do not use online meetings. We are not using Google Meet, Zoom or other online meeting applications.

Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course, however students are expected to

  • be proficient in English (written)
  • have an email account for receiving course access information and other updates related to the course
  • have access to high-speed internet
  • have access to a computer capable of running a current version of FireFox or Chrome OR a tablets capable of running the Moodle App.
Evaluations

There are no formal evaluations in this course. Students are expected to contribute to discussion forums and complete quizzes to test their understanding.
